THE GUARD AROUND THE TOMB.

MAY 10, 1883

LINES BY MRS. MARY BAYARD CLARK.

What is this solemn sound we hear ?
It breaks upon a nation's ear--
Like ocean's sob upon the shore,
The wail of storms whose wrath is o'er.
From proud Virginia's mountains grand
It swells through all our Southern land.

A country mourning o'er its slain,
Who gave their lives, and not in vain,
Since its heart their memory blooms
Fresh as the flowers upon their tombs.
Their toil is o'er, their labors cease,
In war they died, but died for peace.

They bravely fought and nobly fell,
And fame their glorious deeds shall tell;
When she decrees a crown of Bay
No power on earth her hand can stay;
And on these graves a wreath is laid
No storm can change, no time can fade.

[page 3]
Where she has placed this deathless crown
Let woman cast her roses down,
And Love and Fame forever stand
A guard of honor, hand in hand,
Around these graves where heroes lie
Who fought for right, nor feared to die.

3 Reading of selected poems, Rev. Geo. L. Leyburn, D.D.

AULD LANG SYNE.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind;
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o'lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my friends,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And here's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine,
And we'll tak' a right geld willie-waught
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my friends,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

And surely ye'll be your pint stoup,
And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,

6 Music by the Choir, "Tenting To-night."

TENTING ON THE OLD CAMP GROUND.

We're tenting; to night on the old Camp ground,
Give us a song to cheer
Our weary hearts, a song of home,
And friends we love so dear.

CHORUS:
Many are the hearts that are weary to-night,
Wishing for the war to cease,
Many are the hearts looking for the right
To see the dawn of peace.
Tenting to-night, Tenting to-night,
Tenting on the old Camp Ground.

We've been tenting to-night on the old Camp ground
Thinking of days gone by,
Of the lov'd ones at home that gave us the hand,
And the tear that said "Goodbye."

CHO.-Many are the hearts, etc.

We are tired of war on the old Camp ground,
Many are dead and gone,
Of the brave and true who've left their homes.
Others been wounded long.

CHO.-Many are the hearts, etc.

We've been fighting to-day on the old Camp ground,
Many are lying near;
Some are dead, some are dying,
Many are in tears.

CHORUS.
Many are the hearts that are weary to-night,
Wishing for the war to cease,
Many are the hearts looking for the right
To see the dawn of peace.
Dying to-night, Dying to-night,
Dying on the old Camp ground.

              <text>Need of an Auditorium.

When a large number of citizens and pupils had assembled at the Opera House for the closing exercises of the New Bern Graded School it was found that on account of the want of windows to furnish necessary light the pupils could not read their essays and for want of air all suffered from heat and the services had to be suspended. This certainly should be a lesson in contemplation of the erection of the proposed New School Building. If a building fronting on Hancock street with its handsome front of red brick taken from some design to be selected should be erected. A two-story building seventy-five feet long and sixty-five feet wide in a beautiful grove of elm trees, surrounded by an abundance of ground, immediately opposite the Methodist Church, with at least forty windows in each story, which will afford an abundance of Sunshine, Light and Air in every room in the building and nothing can cut off this sunshine, air and light from penetrating every room in the building, with no building near enough to burn it, with a ten foot set of stairs leading into a broad passageway with a large door both in the front and rear, with the door hingeing on the outside, with no lock or any fastenings on the near door except a wooden bar, so that no danger could possibly happen to those assembled in the auditorium if a fire and panic should ensue. Remember the fearful catastrophe which recently took place in Pennsylvania when two hundred and fifty children were burned to death in a school building.

This building would be a fitting monument to the memory of Mr. Moses Griffin whose estate furnished every dollar used in erecting it. On the contrary if this building which is to cost Ten Thousand Dollars should be jammed to the blank wall of a building, the front wall of it to be jammed to the rear wall of another building in the most obscure corner of the Academy lot, with a passageway to be cut through a brick wall for a passageway from one building to the other would make a Fire Trap for both buildings and would entirely cut off all light and air from the front of the rear building and from the rear of the front building. It would cast an indignity on the memory of Mr. Moses Griffin whose funds are expected to be used in building it.

I have for near fifty years been the Trustee of the Griffin estate[,] also one of the Trustees of the New Bern Academy and have at heart the interest of the Academy as any one of the other trustees, and in my earnest desire to see a building free from any danger from fire or from any catastrophe which might happen I am guarding the interest of the griffin estate and doing my full share of duty to the interest of the New Bern Academy.

On my petition to the Court as Trustee of the Griffin Estate I was directed to place Ten Thousand Dollars to the credit of Wm. H. Oliver, T.A. Green, Judge H.R. Bryan, M. DeW. Stevenson and A.D. Ward to be used by them in erecting a Memorial Building to the memory of Mr. Moses Griffin founder of the Griffin Free School.

TO OUR STOCKHOLDERS:
Attached hereto is a statement of the condition of the New Bern Morris Plan Company at the close of business December 31, 1917. The growth of our Company during this period has been gratifying and has met the expectation of the Directors. Total loans of $64,641.00 were made and we are now loaning at the rate of something over $7,000.00 monthly.

At the beginning of our year only one-fifth of our capital stock was paid in, the balance being received by 20 per cent instalments at intervals of several months. It was not until December 1st that it was fully paid in. Our expenses during this period of nine months were, of course, running in full, and for some part of this period nearly equalled our income. Now that the full earning power of our entire stock is in effect, the net earnings will be materially increased. The institution is meeting a real need in this and surrounding communities and at the same time promises to earn and pay a good return to its stockholders.

Respectfully submitted,
W. W. GRIFFIN,
President.

              <text>NEW SCHOOL BUILDING.
In order that our people may know my position in regard to the School Building which is proposed to be erected on the Academy lot, I make the following statement: There are some who want it built in the upper corner of the lot, the most obscure place on the lot. To build it in the rear of a building thereby cutting off all view of it from the two principal streets. The great objection is to join a ten thousand dollar building to another building.. The front of the rear building to be jammed to the rear of a solid brick wall and thereby cut off all sunshine, all air and light from both buildings, one in the front, one in the rear. This will double the hazard from fire; if one building should burn it would also cause the burning of both. This arrangement would make a FIRE TRAP for both buildings. From reports recently made there were about Fifty School Buildings burned during the past twelve month; in one of them TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY CHILDREN were burned to death.

Let the parents of the children who will attend the School take warning from this fearful loss of life and use their influence to prevent the possibility of such a calamity taking place[.] It is proposed to cut a passage from one building to the other through a brick wall thereby damaging the building.

There is no necessity for this, there is an abundance of room on the south side of the lot where a building could be erected free from all the above objections. No other building could burn it, sunshine and light in every room room could never be cut off. I am told by an advocate of placing it in the rear of another building that it would cost two thousand dollars less than if placed where I proposed.

It was a great pleasure to me to petition the court to direct me (who for fifty years has been Trustee of the Estate of Moses Griffin) to place Ten Thousand Dollars in Bank to the credit of a committee named by me to be used by them in erecting a building for school purposes in the Academy lot. The money was immediately placed in Bank and as soon as the site is settled on the building can be started.

I am directed by the court to take a mortgage on the building for Ten Thousand Dollars and I certainly will not take a mortgage on a building which perhaps will cost some six or seven thousand dollars. Why divert a part of this fund to some other purpose than erect in a beautiful grove where there is an abundance of space, a building fitting as a Memorial Building to Mr. Moses Griffin whose estate furnished every dollar for the entire cost of erecting the building? I am told that the new building and the building to which it is proposed to be joined would be called the Griffin Memorial Building, this I most strongly object to and would not recognize it. The Griffin Estate will enter into no copartnership and will not acknowledge a single brick nor an ounce of mortar as a memorial unless the same has been paid by its own funds.

MOST GRACIOUS FATHER AND GOD, who hast promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn to thee, look down, we beseech thee, from heaven thy dwelling place, upon us thy unworthy servants, who, under an awful apprehension of thy judgments, and a deep conviction of our sinfulness, prostrate ourselves before thee. We acknowledge it to be of thy goodness alone, that, whilst thou hast visited others with pestilence, thou hast so long spared us. Have pity, O LORD, have pity upon us. Withdraw thy heavy hand from those who are suffering thy judgments, and arrest the grievous calamity with which others have been scourged, and against which our only security is in thy compassion. We confess, with shame and contrition, that in pride and hardness of our hearts, we have shown ourselves unthankful for thy mercies, and have followed our own inclinations instead of thy holy laws; yet, O merciful Father, suffer not thy destroying angel to lift up his hand against us, but keep us in health and safety; and grant, that being warned by the sufferings of others to repent of our sins, we may be preserved from all evil by thy mighty protection, and enjoy the continuance of thy mercy and grace, though the merits of our only Mediator and Advocate, JESUS CHRIST. Amen.

O, ALMIGHTY GOD, who, by the many instances of mortality which encompass us on every side, and by the warning, now especially urged upon us, of our exposure to sudden stroke of death, dost call upon us seriously to consider the shortness of our time here upon earth, and remindest us that in the midst of life we are in death, so teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Give us grace to turn unto thee with timely repentance, and thus to obtain, through the merits of our Savior, that pardon to-day, for which, tomorrow, it may be too late to seek; that so being strengthened by thy good SPIRIT against the terrors of death, and daily advancing in godliness, we may at all times be ready to give up our souls into thy hands, O gracious Father, in the hope of a blessed immortality, through the mediation and for the merits of JESUS CHRIST our Lord. Amen.
