Description: Image of a roadway with a footpath over a swamp in eastern North Carolina in 1884. Reed further describes this photo as "The Ford Near Rawle's Mills, where the Forty-fourth was 'baptized.'--At the time of the skirmish, Nov. 2, 1862, there was no bridge, and the water at that place was quite three feed deep. The woods beyond the bridge are on ground from six to ten feet above the level of the road, and the enemy was concealed by the foliage."
