White Hall, where the Confederate Gunboat Lay

Seven Springs (N.C.)--History--Civil War, 1861-1865

Image of the Neuse River at White Hall (now Seven Springs), N.C., where the C.S.S. Neuse was built. Reed describes the picture further, when he states, "Whitehall, the River Bank where the Confederates were building the Gunboat.--The 'Iron Clad' was in process of construction on the bank between the bridge and the clump of bushes to the right. At the time of the battle ineffectual attempts were made to set fire to the craft, and the Artillery also attempted to destroy it with shells. After the Union forces retired, all damage was repaired and the boat launched. As she drew fourteen feet, and there was but eight feet of water on the bar at Kinston, she never fulfilled the hopes of the builders."
