Image of an open ground near New Bern where the 44th Massachusetts had their Campground during the Civil War. In the distance, a man can be seen with what appears to be a horse-drawn mowing machine. Reed further describes the photograph as follows: "Old Camp-Ground of the Forty-Fourth, where the right wing of the barracks stood.--The mound on the left is the remains of a fort, built after the regiment came home. In the centre is a glimpse of the Neuse, and halfway between the two 'survivors of the 44th,' on the further side of the river, is where Fort Anderson was located."
