Description

Engraved two shilling and six pence Debenture Bill issued by North Carolina. Printed from engraved copper plate with scroll leafage border on left edge and vignette of duck in a circle on lower left corner. Inscribed: “2s.6d TWO SHILLINGS, & SIX PENCE No 19135/ The Province of North carolina/ is indebted to the Possessor hereof/ Two Shillings & Six Pence proc. Money/ to be paid out of the Public Treasury/ According to Act of Assembly passed/ Decbr 1771” Ink signatures on obverse: “John Harvey, J Rutherfurd, Lewis De Rosset and Rd Caswell.” Bill has not inscriptions on the reverse. Bill has never been folded.
Animal: Duck
Bill was issued in a series of 16,000. A total of £60,000 in Debenture Bills was issued pursuant to the December 1771 Act of the Assembly. The two shilling and six pence note was issued in two series—one with a duck and the other with a house.
