Description
Typeset Debenture Bill issued by North Carolina with borders all around; borders on the sides and bottom contain the denomination and inscription “Death to counterfeit.” Printed text: “North-Carolina. [No. ]/ [ii s. vi d.] two shillings/ and six pence./ THE Province of North-Carolina is in-/debted to the Possessor hereof, Two Shillings/ and Six Pence, Proclamation Money; to be paid out of the Public Treasury, on Demand, at any /Time after the Tenth Day of JUNE, 1772, ac-cording to ACT of ASSEMBLY, passed December/ 1768. Ink signatures on obverse: “Rd Caswell”, “Lewis De Rosset”/ “Jas Hasell” and “Thos C. Howe.” Ink inscriptions on reverse: “James Dyer to N54/ N54.” Bill folded vertically and horizontally in quarters.
£20,000 in Debenture Bills payable in Proclamation Money after June 10 1772 as authorized by the December 5 1768 Act of the Assembly. Bills were issued in denominations of 2s6d (two series differing slightly in layout of text), 5s, 10s, 20s, 40s, £3 and £5.
