Description: Reed further described this photograph as "Through Long Swamp from Little Washington to Rawle's Mills.--This was the first water that the regiment had to wade through in 1862. Then it was deep, nearly up to the plank walk for half a mile. When this picture was taken, one could have passed through without wetting his feet. The man on the left is 'Joe Chauncy.' McIntire and a Mr. Adams are on the plank, watching the movements of a moccasin snake." He also stated, "The plank walks to the right of the pictures 595 [this photo] and 585 [xxv.30] show the provision in that section of the country to enable pedestrians to pass through the swamps or over narrow or shallow streams without wading."
