23 August 1841 (filed in 1842 folder)—"This may certy that it is my Desier that my Little gurl Mahaly to be Bound to Mr. Shady Willis her Age is seven years old the seventh of last March. Ferriby x Dixon. Ates: Nathan Whitford." [See 10 May 1842]

February 1844--Order to the sheriff to bring the "Girls Sally, Polly and Adeline and the son (name unknown) children of Alley Sutton." Haywood and Catherine, children of Margaret Wiggins, Margaret the child of Penny Jones.

13 February 1844--George Hicks, a free boy of color aged 14, bound to William W. Clark as a house servant. Bond signed by William W. Clark and Elijah Clark.

14 February 1844--James Hicks, a free boy of color aged 8, bound to Samuel Simpson as a house servant.

14 February 1844--William Hicks, a free boy of color aged 17, bound to Samuel Simpson as a carpenter.

14 February 1844--Rhoda Hicks, a free girl of color aged 10, bound to Samuel Simpson as a spinster.

May 1844—Order to the sheriff to notify Mary Moore, free colored woman, to have her 5 children at the next term of court to be bound. Executed by Bryan Whitford.

12 May 1844--Ellen Muse, orphan aged 16, bound to Dempsy Rice as a spinster.

13 May 1844--James Muse, orphan aged 16, bound to Dempsy Rice as a Cooper.

13 May 1844--James Hart, orphan aged 15, bound to James Stewart as a cooper.

13 May 1844--Oliver Petit, orphan aged 14, bound to Lewis Jones as a farmer.

13 August 1844--William John Henderson, orphan aged 12, bound to Cicero M. Davis as a painter. A note from C.F. Simpson reads "this is to certify that it was Mrs. S-----'s [name is illegible] Request for Mr. davis to take the boy John Henderson & have him Bound to him. She sent for Mr. davis while at My House and Got him to take the Boy in charge."

11 November 1844--Jane Irving, orphan aged 12, bound to Thomas J. Emery as a spinster.

11 November 1844--Benjamin Irving, orphan aged 15, bound to Thomas J. Emery as a farmer.

1845

February 1845--Summons for William Henry Caton child of Lavinia Caton to appear to be bound at the next term. A note on the summons indicates, "Not to be found in my county. F.J. Prentiss, Shff."

February 1845--Order for James Moore, Nathaniel Moore and Milberry Moore, children of Mary Moore to be brought to next court term and be apprenticed.

10 February 1845--Henry McIntosh, an orphan aged 13, bound to Elijah Hardison as a cooper.

10 February 1845--Hannah Gibble, an orphan aged 13 years, bound to Elijah Ferguson as a spinster.

15 February 1845--Thomas Daniels, a free boy of color aged 14 years, bound to Joshua Scott as a brick maker. A bond was signed by Scott and John L. Durand.

May 1845--Summons to the sheriff to notify the following to appear at the August Term for binding the children as apprentices: Mary Johnston a free woman of color and mother of Sarah Ann aged 16 years, Betty aged 14 years, Louisa aged 13 years, Kesiah aged 11 years, and Hansey aged 8 years. Fanny Johnston a free woman of color mother of Susan aged 10 years, Harriet aged 7 years, Wealthy aged 12 years, and David aged 3 years. A scribbled note indicates that two other children of Mary's are Henry aged 3 years and an infant aged 1 year.

13 May 1845--James Moore, a free boy of color aged 15, bound to David R. Whitford as a farmer. A bond was signed by Whitford and Nathan Whitford.

13 May 1845--Milberry Moore, a free boy of color aged 10, bound to David R. Whitford as a farmer. A bond was signed by Whitford and Nathan Whitford.

13 May 1845--Ben Moore, a free boy of color aged 13, bound to David R. Whitford as a farmer. A bond was signed by Whitford and Nathan Whitford.

15 May 1845--John Harris, a free boy of color aged 17 on 9 September 1844, bound to William Hilton as a mason. A bond was signed by Hilton and Hardy B. Lane.

August 1845--Summons for John Whitford to appear at the November Term of Court "and to bring with him an orphan lad named Francis Civils" to show cause why the boy should not be "apprenticed to some more fit master."

10 November 1845--Sidney Jefferson, a free girl of color aged 3, bound to John M. Whitford as a spinster. A bond was signed by Whitford and Enoch Averitt.

10 November 1845--Susan Jefferson, a free girl of color aged 8 years, bound to John M. Whitford as a spinster. A bond was signed by Whitford and Enoch Avitt [also Avery].

10 November 1845--Craven Dickenson, an orphan [no age listed], bound to George Denby as a carpenter. A note with the indenture reads "The County Court of Craven is respectfully informed that I consent to have my son Craven Dickenson bound apprentice George Denby to learn the Carpenters trade. November 10, 1845. Z. [or L] E. Dickinson."

10 November 1845--Francis Civils, an orphan aged 15 years, bound to John M. Whitford as a cooper.

11 November 1845--Frank Mitchell, a free boy of color aged 18, bound to James Anthony Armstrong as a harness maker. A bond was signed by Armstrong and Joshua Scott.
