14 February 1831—William Mitchell, an orphan aged 14 years, bound to Benajah Caton as a shoemaker.

14 February 1831—John Hargett, an orphan aged 11 years, bound to Charles Carter as a butcher.

May 1831—"Ordered that the Sheriff produce before the court at the next August sessions two free boys of color named Rounseval Lindsay & Gaston Lindsay or Jackson & notify Brew Jackson the mother of said boys to shew cause at next Court why they should not be apprenticed to James Riggs & Samuel Jones. Attest J.G. Stanly."

9 May 1831—John Jones, an orphan aged 7 years, bound to Abner Brickhouse as a farmer.

9 May 1831—James Rosell [also Rossell], an orphan aged 14 years, bound to David Whitford as a cooper. [A bond to not leave the county with the apprentice indicates that James Rosell is a free boy of color. David Whitford and Hardy Whitford signed the bond.]

10 May 1831—"This is to certify that you have my free consent to Bind my daughter Anna Smith to Mr. William C. Smaw & His wife Untill she is twenty one years of age to learn to be a seamstress. She was born the 23rd of October 1816. Harry x Smith. Witness John L. Turner." [Filmed with the 1816 indentures.]

12 May 1831—Levi Jarman, an orphan aged 16 years, bound to Asa Jones as a cooper. [Another document (bond to not leave the county with Levi) indicates Levi Jarman is a free boy of color. Asa Jones and John Jones signed the bond.]

12 May 1831—John Pear, a boy of color aged 13 years, bound to Asa Jones as a cooper.

8 August 1831—Joseph G. S. Pendleton, an orphan aged 14 years, bound to William D. O’Leary [also William D. O. Larry] as a shoemaker.

8 August 1831—Richard Carey, an orphan aged 14 years, bound to Edward Carey as a farmer.

14 November 1831—Robert Jones, an orphan aged 12 years, bound to George W. Dixon as a taylor.

1832

13 February 1832—William Leigh [also Lee], an orphan aged 16 years, bound to John W. Leigh [also Lee] as a turner[?].

13 February 1832—Bond where John C. Stanly promises not to leave the county with Green Copes, his apprentice and a free boy of color. John C. Stanly, Alexander S. Stanly and David Lewis signed the bond. Green Copes, an orphan aged [blank], bound to John C. Stanly as a cooper.

16 August 1832—Shadrack Heath, an orphan aged 9 years, bound to Samuel Ipock as a farmer.

17 August 1832—Green Copes, an orphan aged 16 years on December 1, 1832, bound to Thomas Sparrow as a ship carpenter. [A bond to not leave the county states Green Copes is a free boy of color. Thomas Sparrow, David Lewis, and Samuel Whitehurst signed the bond.]

November 1832—"The Grand Jury report that there is a window in the Passage of the Dungeon of the Jail which is so much decayed that it is unsafe & requires immediate attention & that the Glass in two of the windows are very much Broken & the Boxes on the Sinks are broken & makes the rooms offensive & that he walls of the Jail are dirty & require white washing. The Grand Jury report that they have knowledge of two orphans Arnett & Cason Johnson whom their mother is not able to support & that there is danger of their suffering & that Guilford Gatlin one of the present Jury is willing to take them they being bound to him. Foreman, Southy Rew."

13 November 1832—Amos Morgan, an orphan aged 5 years, bound to Wiley Jones as a farmer. [A bond to not leave the county states that Amos is a free boy of color. Wiley Jones and Samuel Pearson signed the bond.]

17 August 1832—Asa Phinnikin [also Pinnikin], an orphan aged 18½ years, bound to Zaccheus Slade as a blacksmith. [A bond to not leave the county states Asa is a free boy of color. Zaccheus Slade, James Taylor, and Wright C. Stanly signed the bond.]

16 November 1832—Arnett Johnson, an orphan aged 17 years, bound to Guilford Gatlin as a farmer.

17 November 1832—Cason Johnson, an orphan aged 15 years, bound to Guilford Gatlin as a farmer.

12 November 1832—James Remm [Rhem], an orphan aged 16 years, bound to Elijah Clark as a farmer.

1833

12 February 1833—"I wish the court to bind my son John Wilson to Mr. Hardy Whitford to be lernt the shoemaking bizeness. John was 13 years old on or about 12 Dec 1832. Rachel x Wilson. Signed in presence of Jas. C. Stevenson. Let him be bound."

13 February 1833—John Wilson, a boy of color, aged 13 years December 1832, bound to Hardy Whitford as a shoemaker.

14 May 1833—Stephen Paul, an orphan aged 15 years, bound to Noah B. Paul as a cooper.

14 May 1833—Constables bond for William Oglesby with Samuel Potter and David B. Gibson sureties.

12 August 1833—Edgar L. Perkins, an orphan aged 15 years, bound to John Hutchinson as a saddler.

13 August 1833—Rosanna Woods, an orphan [and free girl of color] aged 11 years, bound to Samuel E. Chapman as a spinster.

13 August 1833—William Laughinghouse, an orphan aged 18 years, bound to William Palmer as a cooper.

15 August 1833—Eliza Burr, an orphan aged 7 years, bound to Eliza Vipon until 18 years, as a spinster. [A bond signed by Eliza Vipon and Thomas Watson indicates that Eliza Burr is a free girl of color.]

14 November 1833—Jesse Morgan, an orphan aged 10 years, bound to Andrew H. Richardson as a cooper. [Endorsement reads "May 11, 1835, Value received, I hereby assign & transfer all my right & interest in this indenture …said apprentice to Henry G. Cutler. A.H. Richardson" [A bond signed by A.H. Richardson, Alexander S. Stanly, and John L Durand indicates Jesse is a free boy of color.]

1834

10 February 1834—Jesse Hall, an orphan aged 8 years, bound to Elisha Griffin as a cooper.

10 February 1834—"This is to certify that I wish the court to bind my son James Harris a free boy of colour to Mr. Joshua Scott to lern the shoe making trade. The boy is 16 years old the 3 day of Jany last. Respectfully, Pasience x Harris. Signed in presence of H. Whitford. To be bound accordingly." [Also includes his apprentice bond and bond to not leave Craven County.]

May 1834—"The Jurors uppon their oath present to the notice of the court two children of colour, children of Patsey Laughinghouse, of Capt. Dudley’s district and refer the court to Leml. Anders for information on the subject. Guilfd. Murphy, F.M., W. Handcock, L.A. Andrews, J.H. Richardson, Edmund Heath, Solomon Broughton, Emery Caraway, Amos Gaskins, Thos. Purify, Tho. Cuthell, Charles Butler, Jno. R. Spight, Jesse Holton."

12 May 1834—George Lewis, an orphan aged 11 years, bound to Henry A. Jones as a calker. [A bond signed by Henry A. Jones and Hardy A. Jones indicates that George Lewis is a free boy of color.]

13 May 1834—Francis Castix, an orphan aged 18 years on 14 June 1834, bound to Francis J. Prentice as a taylor.

16 May 1834—Thomas Green, an orphan aged 17 years, bound to Moses Jarvis as a seaman.

16 May 1834—William Rhem, an orphan aged 17 years, bound to Moses Jarvis as a tanner and currier.

11 August 1834—James Mitchell, an orphan aged 7 years, bound to Simon Bright as a farmer. [A bond signed by Simon Bright, Isaac Whitford, and Robert Bright indicates James Mitchell is a free boy of color.]

12 August 1834—"To Mrs. Elizabeth Buckley. Take notice, I shall apply to the court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for Craven County, on Wednesday the 13th day of August AD 1834, to rescind the Indentures of Apprenticeship for my child, which were granted to you at the present term of said court. Henry Richardson."

14 August 1834—William Allen, an orphan [and a free boy of color] aged 19 years, bound to John C. Stanly as a farmer.

16 August 1834—William Carter, an orphan aged 14 years, bound to John Chadwick as a chair maker.

16 August 1834—John Mansfield, an orphan aged 14 years, bound to John Chadwick as a carriage maker.

November 1834—"The Grandjury for the County of Craven Novr. Term 1834 present Elijah Dixon & Jesse Dixon, sons of Jinsey Dixon, Thomas Tunstall & Jackson Tunstall, sons of Hollon Tunstall, Shadrick Gatlin & Gardner Gatlin sons of Margaret Gatlin, James Fullinggame son of Argent Fullinggame, to the court for the purpose of Having them bound to som trade. Jas. Howard, Forman; Cason Brinson, King Wise, James Roach, John Fornes, Michael Arthur, Sinclar Lancaster, John Fonville, Furnaford Chapman, Wm. W. Clark, Gibeon Dixon, Cason Scott, D.R. Whitford."

15 May 1835—"I take this method of letting you know that the binding my son Jno. Marshall to Mr. Orin Truffant meets my approbation praying at the same time to be excused from making appearance [cannot read next few words]. Yours respectfully, Elizabeth D. Marshall."
