Description
Engraved thirty shilling Debenture Bill issued by North Carolina. Printed from engraved copper plate with scroll and shell border on left edge and circular vignette of hand holding a falchion (medieval sword) on lower left corner. Inscribed: “30s. THIRTY SHILLINGS -- No 263/ The Province of North carolina is in-/ debted to the Possessor hereof Thirty/ Shillings Proc. Money to be paid out/ of the Public Treasury according to/ Act of Assembly passed/ Dec 1771” Ink signatures on obverse: “J Rutherfurd” and “John Harvey”/ “Rd Caswell” and “Lewis De Rosset.” Bill signed on the reverse: “Montfort.” Bill folded in half vertically.

Bill was issued in a series of 4,000. A total of £60,000 in Debenture Bills was issued pursuant to the December 1771 Act of the Assembly. Joseph Montfort was the Treasurer for the Northern District of North Carolina. Counterfeit thirty-shilling bills in this series are known.
