Description
Engraved five-shilling note issued by North Carolina. Printed from engraved copper plate with scrolled leaf border on left edge and a squirrel in a circle on lower left corner. Printed inscription: “North Carolina./vs. Five Shillings./ Proclamation Money according to Act of / Assembly pass’d ye 9th of March 1754.” Bill is numbered in ink in upper right corner: [Illegible]. Signed in ink on obverse: one illegible signature and “Sam Swann.” In ink on reverse: a row of script “J.” Bill folded in quarters.
Fragments of support paper adhered to the reverse of the bill. Bill issued in a series of 8,000.
